Pre War

Alfred Thomas Poole was born on 2 June 1885 in Shipton Moyne, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, the son of Alfred and Adelaide Poole and one of nine children.


On the 1891 and 1901 Censuses the family were living at 5 Redgrove Cottages, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire where his father was working as a gardener domestic. Alfred was also a gardener in 1901.


He married Mary Jane Mays on 22 June 1913 at Falkenham, Suffolk and their daughter Vera Mary was born on 13 April 1914, followed by Alfred Arthur in March 1917.


His parents later lived at Brook View, Golden Valley, Staverton, Cheltenham. Alfred was said to be living in Buntingford at the time of enlistment. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and joined the Middlesex Regiment serving with the 2nd Battalion.


Alfred was killed in action on 23 October 1916, aged 29. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received pay owing of £2 1s 3d. A war gratuity of £3 was divided between Mrs Bessie Utting & Mrs Adelaide Poole.


His widow also received a pension of £1 2s 11d for herself and her two children and her address on pension cards was Charity Cottage, Falkenham, Suffolk, however she died in 1918, aged 37 in Cheltenham. (Where his parents were living).
