Pre War

Arnold Edwin Bare was the son of Thomas Edwin and Blanche Bare. He and his wife, Janie, lived at ‘Rokra’, 12 Bushey Grove Road, Watford and had three children.

He joined the Artists’ Rifles in 1897 and was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal. This award was for non-commissioned officers and men who had completed a minimum of 12 years’ service in the Territorial Force, providing they had attended 12 annual training camps.

Wartime Service

Arnold volunteered for foreign service on 4 August 1914 and went to France with the 1st Battalion of the Artists Rifles in October 1914 and served as Captain. In August 1916 he commanded a Guard of Honour to the King and was awarded the unusual honour of Member of the Victorian Order.

He was killed in action at Passchendaele on 30 October 1917, aged 36.  He is remembered with honour at the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 153 and also commemorated on the Bushey Memorial and at St James’ and St Paul’s churches.
