Pre War

Born 1895. Lived with his Grandparents and possibly father (Edward?) in a family of 17 in Writtle, Essex. The 1901 Census shows him aged 6 years, living in St Johns Green, Writtle, Essex. With his grandparents and the 1911 Census shows him aged 15 years, still living in St Johns Green, Writtle, Essex. With his grandparents. His occupation is given as a House Boy Domestic.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Hertford, into the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. The 6th Battalion embarked from Southampton for La Havre, France, on the 30th July 1915. He must have been transferred to the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, as he was with them when he died on the 30th October 1917. There were 75 men in the battalion killed or missing on that day, however his medal card records that he died of wounds, so it is possible that he died soon after being wounded on that date or may have been wounded before this date.
