Pre War

James Ingrey Porter was born in 1885 in Codicote, the son of Charles and Mary Ann Porter, and baptised in Codicote on 25 January 1885.


On the 1901 Census he was working as a Page in the home of William Wodehouse, JP, living at Woolmers, Hertingfordbury and by 1911 James had moved to London and was living at 66B Eaton Square, London SW1 and working as a 'Footman Domestic' at the home of Vesey Holt, a Banker and Army Agent. 


He married Emily Elizabeth Kimber at St Luke, Chelsea, London on 4 December 1911 at which time James and Emily were both said to be residing at 22 Winchester House, London and he was working as a Butler. 

Wartime Service

James enlisted at Chelsea and joined the 18th Battalion, London Irish Rifles. He served in France from 21 September 1915 and was killed in action on at Vimy Ridge on 22 May 1916.


He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

A war gratuity of £3 was granted to legatee Miss Emily Anne Howick as well as pay owing of 15 shillings 3 pence. Emily Anne Howick appears to be the Guardian of his widow Emily Elizabeth on pension records, although no record of the amount awarded is shown.
