Son of John and Julia (nee GRAY) BARNES.


His parents married 26 December 1889 in Edmonton, Middx.  John died 22 September 1939 in the Watford district aged 85; Julia died 27 December 1960 in the Hemel Hempstead, Herts, district aged 94; both buried at St Lawrence’s, Abbot’s Langley, Herts.


Ernest was born 25 February 1891 in Abbot’s Langley, and baptised 7 June 1891 at St Lawrence’s, Abbot’s Langley.  He resided in Wembley, late of Watford.


On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Abbot’s Langley, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he still lived in Abbot’s Langley, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a private gardener aged 20, he still lived in Abbot’s Langley.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Edward Street, London; appears to have no medals, and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Ernest’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
