George Benjamin Poulter was born on 5 April 1898 in Baldock, Herts, the son of [Ernest] John and Emily Poulter (nee Goddard) and was baptised on 12 June 1898 in Baldock. He was one of twelve children, although three died in infancy.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Hitchin Street, Baldock, where his father was working as a groom. They remained in Hitchin Street in 1911 at which time George, (incorrectly named as George Ephraim Poulter) was a 12 year old scholar.


His father died on 5 September 1915 and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Baldock.     

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Hitchin and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving in France  with the 8th Battalion. 


He was killed in action on 15 September 1916 during an assault on a German trench known as the Quadrilateral. He was 18 years old.  George has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

A war gratuity of £5 10s was split between his mother and sister in law Lily, with his mother receiving £4 19s and Lily receiving 11s. His mother also received pay owing of £1 10s and was awarded a pension of £5s 6d a week. 


Brother to Arthur Ephraim Poulter who served with the Hertfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 3 November 1917. He is named on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
