Biography

Cecil Berry was first identified in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, where his address was given at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley. He was not included in any other Parish records. He was recorded serving as a Private with the 4th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment.

Cecil was born in the autumn of 1881 at Edmonton, one of seven children (six sons and one daughter) born to Theophilus and Rosetta Berry. In the 1881 Census the family lived at 46 Davenant Road, Holloway, and Theophilus worked as a Clerk. In the 1901 Census the family lived at 8 Clarendon Road, Wandsworth. Theophilus was employed as a Cashier at a Stationer’s, whilst four of his sons, including Cecil, worked as Commercial Clerks. The family employed a Domestic Servant who lived with them.

In the summer of 1909 Cecil married Frances Batchelor at Battle in Sussex. By the time of the 1911 Census the couple lived at “Sherborne”, Melrose Road, Merton Park, south-west London. Cecil continued to work as a Commercial Clerk.

It is not known when he enlisted, however his Medal Roll indicated that he joined up with the 4th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, and remained with that unit throughout the War, and into the post-War period.

Cecil Berry survived the War.
