Pre War
George Alexander Powell was born on 22 January 1897, the son of Thomas Godfrey and Jemima Rachel Powell, and was baptised on 4 May 1897 at St Jude's Church, South Kensington, London. They were then living at 22 Gledhow Gardens and his father's occupation was recorded as gentleman. He was one of six children, but one died in infancy.
His parents were recorded on the 1911 Census living at 4 Wetherby Gardens, Earls Court, London. His father's occupation was given as 'Late Captain, Hertfordshire Militia'. He died in Kent in 1912, aged 51.
George was educated at Mr J W Hawtry's School in Broadstairs Kent, followed by Marlborough College from September 1910 to December 1913. He then worked in the office of the Grand Central Railway's solicitor.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in October 1914 and served as a temporary 2nd Lieutenant with the 15th (Service) Battalion of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. In March 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant and served in France from 1 June 1915.
He was killed in action in the Dardanelles on 28 June 1915, aged 18 when he led his platoon into a Turkish trench, captured a portion of it but was hit on the back of the head by shrapnel and was killed instantly. George has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey [Gallipoli].

A war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £48 1s 0d was divided between his mother and brother Thomas.
