Biography

The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:

Though Hubert Pownall's connection with Old Hall was so short - he spent most of his school life at St. Augustine's, Ramsgate - his death will be specially regretted by those who remember him as a little boy at St.

Hugh’s where he spent two terms in the year 1900. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hyde Pownall of Twickenham, and was born 18th May, 1890. After he left school he entered the office of Messrs. Turquand, Young & Co. He was a keen oarsman and took a leading part in the Twickenham Rowing Club, of which he was at one time the Secretary. He also distinguished himself at hockey. On the outbreak of war he joined the Hon. Artillery Company, and in November, 1914, he obtained a commission in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. His active service began in the following April, and a month later he was gassed and invalided home. He returned to the front in May, 1916, and became grenade officer to his battalion. In the advance of July, 1916, he was reported wounded and missing, and is now officially reported killed in action on July 23rd. To his mother, Mrs. Behan, and his relatives, especially Fathers Arthur and Bernard Pownall we offer the deepest sympathy. Mass was offered far his said in the Chapel at St. Hugh's.
