Born on 15 Jun 1878 in Marylebone, London son of Sir George Christopher Trout Bartley K.C.B. and Lady Mary Charlotte (Cole) Bartley. Educated at Haileybury College 1891-94. Served in South Africa 1899-1902. He married Hilda Frederica Skene of 55 Courtfield Gardens, London in Melcombe Regis St John, Dorset on 20 Nov 1902 and had one son , John.


Stanhope Cole Bartley was born on 15th June 1878, at Marylebone, London, to parents George Christopher Trout Bartley K.C.B. and Lady Mary Charlotte (nee Cole) He had two brothers George and Bryan and one sister Lilian.  On the 1891 census it shows he was attending Bengeo School at Danesbury, Warren Park Estate, in Bengeo, Herts, aged 12.  He then went on to Haileybury College 1891-1894.  He attended R.M.A. Woolwich from 15 Jan 1896 and on Graduation was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 23 Dec 1897. (His promotions were to Lieutenant 23 Dec 1900 and Captain 23 Jan 1905.).


He served in the Boer War as Lieutenant in the Royal Field and Horse Artillery.  He was present at the relief of Ladysmith and fought at Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Pieters Hill and Tulega Heights.  He was awarded two medals and six clasps.  On 20th November 1902 he married Hilda Frederica Skene, in Weymouth.  He retired from the army in Jul 1909 and joined the Special Reserve.  In 1911 he was living at The Shooting Box, Shovelstrode, East Grinstead, Sussex, with his wife Hilda, and their son John and he was listed as Captain Royal Field Artillery retired.

Wartime Service

His battery in Royal Garrison Artillery was sent to France arriving on 9th January 1916, they were stationed near St Omer, and he was attached to ‘D’ Battery 176 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He was given command of the battery only two days before his death.  The unit war diary shows that on the 12 March 1916, the Battery were stationed at Bois Grenier. German artillery fired 56 rounds of 4.2" ammunition at the battery during the morning and a further 26 rounds in the afternoon. It was during one of these bombardments that Captain Bartley was killed.

Additional Information

His brother Bryan Cole Bartley also served in the WW1 joining R.N.V.R in 1915, was in France with R.N.A.S during 1916 and Controller Aircraft production 1917-18 reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He had moved to South Africa in 1897, and served in Railway Pioneer Regiment as a Captain. Also educated at Haileybury school from 1888-1890. Awarded C.B.E (Mil) in 1922.
