Pre War

Albert Edward Bass was born in 1893 and baptised on 29 January 1893 at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford.  On the 1901 Census, the family were living at 3 Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford but by the 1911 Census they had moved to 7 Bartholomew Road and he was living at home with his parents and one of his sisters, and working as a Carman for a wine and spirit merchant.

Wartime Service

He initially enlisted into the Essex Regiment under Reg. No.  36583, later transferring to the East Surrey Regiment under Reg. No. 25966.

Additional Information

His father George received pay owing of £2 4s 10d and his mother Alice received a war gratuity of £3. His father died in 1918 (which may be why the headstone inscription does not mention his father).
