Pre War
Arthur Baxter was born in 1895 in Walsoken, Norfolk to Harry E Baxter, horse slaughterer’s assistant, and Ann (nee Mayes).
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William H (labourer born 1885), Annie (born 1887), Edith (born 1888), Walter (born 1890), Mabel (born 1892), Kate (born 1894), Arthur, Florence (born 1897), and Emily (born 1900) were living near Manor House, Walsoken, Norfolk.
On the 1911 Census the family of parents, William (horse slaughterer’s assistant), Arthur (farm labourer), Florence and Emily were still living near Manor House, Walsoken.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Arthur who enlisted as a Territorial Soldier in the Cambridgeshire Regiment as Private 4529 about Nov 1915 was posted in 3rd/1st Battalion which situated at Halton Camp, Tring.
The 3rd/1st was a training unit (eventually was named the Reserve Battalion in Apr 1916). As Arthur was awarded a War Gratuity it would appear that he went on active service overseas at some time, possibly Salonika with 1st/1st Battalion, Cambs, probably taken ill, evacuated and treated in one of the Hospitals in Tring (could not be confirmed) but died on 1 Jun 1916.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £4 1s 6d was paid to his father.
