Ernest Frank Baulk was born in 1880 (baptised 12 Sep 1880) in Datchworth to John Baulk (cowman) and Sarah (nee Lees).
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Lizzie (stepdaughter born 1870), Harry (stepson born1876), Willie (born 1878), Ernest, and John Spencer (father in law born 1804) were living at Bragbury End, Datchworth.
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Willie, Ernest, Bertie (born 1883), Fred (born 1887), and Ernest Crabtree (nephew born 1875) were living at Cavendish Road, St Peters, St Albans.
On the 1901 Census still living at Cavendish Road the family consisted of Sarah (widow and boarding house keeper), Willie (book checker), Ernest (tailor’s cutter), Bertie (printer), Fred (clerk) plus 3 boarders.
Ernest enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment in St Albans on 29 Jan 1902. He was posted to 2nd Battalion in South Africa on 15 Feb 1902 and was discharged following termination of engagement on 14 Jul 1902.
Ernest married Martha Elizabeth Nixon in 1909.
On the 1911 Census Ernest (tailor’s trimmer) and Martha were living at 27, Burnham Road, St Albans.
Address given as Saltburn, New Dalton Street, St Albans.
Born in Letchworth, enlisted in St Albans.
Wartime Service
No Wartime service record was found for Ernest. He has a serial numbers 11026, Royal Fusiliers, 75776 MGC, 39098 East Lancs, and 140826 MGC but none had supporting documents.
He was first reported as missing and then later presumed to have been killed in action on 21 Mar 1918. This would be during the defence of the German Spring offence.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £10 and arrears of £9 11s 10d was to his widow Martha.
