Pre War

George William Beale was born at Newbridge Barracks, Co Kildare, Ireland on 29 April 1895, son of George Beale a, Cavalry Sergeant in the 3rd Hussars and Rosina Caroline Beale (nee Bear). One of seven children although one died in infancy. His parents married on 4 April 1891, in Ballincollig, Cork, Ireland.


George was Baptised at St Luke’s Church, Victoria Docks, Canning Town, Lon/Middx, on 2 June 1895. At time the family were living at, 8, Western Road, Canning Town.


1901 Census records George aged 5, living with his parents, brothers Alexander (7), Bertram (2) and sister Rosina (10 months), at, 29, College Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His father had retired from the army and was working as a Machinist at the Royal Small Arms Factory.


1911 Census records George aged 15, working as a Draper’s Errand Boy, living with his parents, brothers Alexander (17), Bertram (12) and sister Gladys (8), still at 29, College Road, Cheshunt. His brother Percival was born later in the year.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in his home town of Cheshunt, posted to the Suffolk Regiment with the service number 45057.


Seeing service on the Western Front. He served initially with the 7th Battalion and then the 4th Battalion.


He was killed in action on 26th September 1917, during the Battle of Polygon Wood, (26 Sept to 3 Oct 1917). He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium to the missing.

Additional Information

His mother Rosina Beale received a dependents pension of 5/- a week. His effects of £4-7s-4d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £3, went to his father George Beale.
