Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

Harry George Prior was born on 7 August 1880 to Alexander and Hannah Prior, and baptised in Bishop's Stortford on 31 October 1880. His mother died in 1885 and his father married again to Mary Ann Prior in 1887. On the 1891 Census the family were living in Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford. He married Rose Ellen Tuttle at St John, Hoxton, Hackney, London on 29 July 1907. They had a son Harry  born in 1908 and a daughter Alice born in 1914. On the 1911 Census the family were living at 1 Provost Dwellings in Hoxton and Harry was working as a Horsekeeper for a brewery. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Shoreditch, London and served with the 16th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade which was raised in the Borough of St Pancras on 2 April 1915. He was killed in action on 23 October 1917 and his body was not recovered for burial. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 10s. She also received a pension of £1 5s 5d. Brother to William Prior, who served in the Bedfordshire Regiment and died on 6 August 1916. He is named on the Thiepval Memorial in France. N.B. On the Medal Index he is recorded incorrectly as George H Prior.
