Pre War

Son of Thomas and the late Elizabeth (formerly SAUNDERS, nee DUMPLETON) STONE.

Son of Walter and Jane Louise (nee CLAPHAM) BEAVES of Watford.

His parents married 7 August 1894 at Christ Church, Barnet, Herts.  Walter died 1939 in Watford aged 81, and was buried 12 December in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Jane died 1960 in the Watford district aged 95.

Ernest was born 15 March 1897 in Watford, and baptised 7 May 1897 at St Mary’s, Watford.  He attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 9 January 1906 to 25 April 1911.

On the 1901 Census, aged 4 he lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a schoolboy aged 14, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died of wounds received in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Ernest’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.

There is a Death announcement for Ernest in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 10 November 1917; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 26 October 1918.  Also an entry in the St Michael’s Parish magazine dated December 1917.
