George Morris Pugh was born in Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1888 (baptised 4 Mar 1888) to Charles Morris Pugh, (boot & shoe dealer) and Elizabeth Ruth (nee Morris).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Charles B (born 1883), Victoria (born 1887) and George M were living at 71, Market Street, Dalton in Furness, Lancs.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Victoria, Georg M, William H (born 1890), May B (born 1893) Thomas P (born 1894) and John E (born 1895) were living at 88, Ulverston Road, Dalton in Furness.
In 1911 according to the 1911 Census George M as working as a boot shop assistant as was his brother Thomas and they were living together with sister Victoria (post office clerk), May ( a domestic), John E and grandson Reginald Alfred (born 1917) at Priory Road, Dunstable, Beds. His parents with William Henry were living at a clothes shop, Station Place, Letchworth, Herts.
Wartime Service
George joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry in and was commissioned 19 Nov 1917 as 2nd Lt in the Royal Garrison Artillery and posted to 91st Siege Battery which had arrived in France on 26 May 1916. He joined the battery just as it was increased from 4 9.2 inch Howitzers to 6 inch Howitzers on 18 Dec 1917. The Battery joined 76 Heavy Artillery Group the next day 19 Dec 1917.
In 1918 they were in action on the Somme for the Battles of Albert (21-23 Aug 1918) and Bapaume (31 Aug-3 Sep 1918). It was in this last action that George was wounded and died on 2 Sep 1918.

Arrears £117 17s 1d was paid to brother Charles.
*1 George is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Letchworth Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:
