Son of Patrick and Teresa Beirne, of 17, Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines, Co. Dublin. Born at Mountmellick, Queen's County, Ireland.

Wartime Service

His name and picture appear in De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour, the entry reads:

"BEIRNE, WILLIAM, 2nd Lieut., Royal Air Force, 2nd son of Patrick Beirne, District Inspector, Royal Irish Constabulary, of Ballincollig, co.  Cork, by his wife, Teresa, daughter of the late Richard West, of Clonsilla, co.  Dublin; born Mountmellick, Queen's County, 9 April 1896; educated Mungret College, Limerick; St.  Vincent's College, Castleknock, and Catholic University College, Dublin; enlisted in the Cadet Corps of the Leinster Regt.  3 Sept.  1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 18 Dec.  following; was dangerously wounded at Guillemont 3 Sept.  1916, and invalided home; on recovery was appointed Cadet in the Royal Air Force; gazetted 2nd Lieut.  in that force 25 July, 1917, and died at the Bricket House Red Cross Hospital, St.  Albans, co.  Hertford, 18 Aug.  1918, from the effects of an operation for appendicitis, contracted while on military service.  Buried in the City of St.  Albans Cemetery [Section E, No.  19]; unmarried."
