Born on 7 Aug 1879 in Kensington, London son of Lt. Col. Alfred Wilson Bentley J.P. and Catherine Edith (Rogers) Bentley later of The Grove, Hadley Green Road, Monken Hadley, Barnet and was baptised on 25 Jan 1880 in Kensington.


Educated at Haileybury College 1893–98. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Middlesex Regiment from the Militia 20 May 1899, Lieut 14 Mar 1900, Captain 12 Oct 1901. Served in South Africa 1899-1902 taking part in the relief of Ladysmith and was severely wounded at Spion Kop. He was Army and Navy Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1910. In 1911 he was recorded as a Captain in the 4th Bn, Middlesex Regiment, based at Aldershot. In 1912-1914 he was Superintendent of Gymnasia .

Wartime Service

Promoted to Major 8 Oct 1914. Died at Croix Barbee, near Bethune, France, killed in action.

Elder brother of Geoffrey Malcolm Bentley, died 29th Oct 1914, also remembered at Monken Hadley.
