Son of Henry/Harry and Kate (nee SKINNER) BENTLEY of Watford.

His parents married 1885 in the Registry Office, Altrincham, Chesh. Kate died 4 August 1939 in Watford aged 78, and was buried 8 August in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

Harold was born 30 June 1889 in Watford.  He attended first Sotheron Road Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School, Watford, from 13 January 1896 to 29 March 1904.  He resided in Watford, and worked for the London & North Western Railway Company in the Publicity Department of the General Manager’s Department, Euston.

He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.

On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Watford, with his parents and one sibling. On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, a railway clerk aged 21, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted 3 September 1914 in Kensington, London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 March 1915, and was killed in action. 

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Harold’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a Death announcement for Harold in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 5 June 1915. Recorded as Sergeant in the Borough Roll of Honour.
