Born on 29 Aug 1893 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire son of James Holmes Ranby.


Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1904-08 he became a wholesale textile agent.

Wartime Service

He joined the London Rifle Brigade Territorial Force, Private 9733 before WW1 and was called up on the outbreak of war and entered France on 4 Nov 1914.


He obtained his commission on 24 Oct 1915, was wounded in Apr 1916 and was made Lieutenant on 4 Dec 1916 in the 7th Suffolks. He took part in a successful raid on the enemy trenches and was reported missing, presumed killed in action.
