Pre War

Born in 1895 at Roydon, Essex, son of George and Eliza Rand (later living at 1 Lea Vale, Wormley, Broxbourne, Herts). 1911 Census: living with family at Galley Hill, Waltham Abbey, Herts and working as a nurseryman's labourer.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Hoddesdon, Herts. Left from Southampton on 23 January 1915. Suffered a shell wound to the right eye on 21 March 1915 and sent to 4th Field Hospital. Re-joined the battalion on 1 April 1915. Promoted to Lance Corporal in May and Sergeant the following April 1916. Mentioned in Despatches 9 April 1917.

Also listed as a Private with Reg. No. 2123 – probably his original number before the Territorial forces were re-munbered. War gratuity of £17 awarded to mother Eliza.
