Pre War

Born on 31 May 1893 in Ickworth Lodge, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk son of Algernon Beckford and Anne Katherine (Pettiward) Bevan. Educated at Haileybury College 1907- 09 and Clare College, Cambridge.

Wartime Service

Volunteered as a motorcycle dispatch rider, obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant the Suffolks in Aug 1914 and entered France on 19 Jan 1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant in Jun 1915 and Captain in Jul 1915. He was wounded in action in 1915 but returned to France in Jan 1916. He was killed in action at the battle of Delville Wood when two companies were almost completely wiped out.
