Pre War

Frank Rayner was born in 1891 in Bishops Stortford to John Harold and Elizabeth Rayner and registered as Newcomen Frank Rayner. He does not seem to be living with them or the rest of his family on the 1891 or 1901 Censuses.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Bishop's Stortford and served with the London Regiment, Prince of Wales' own Civil Service Rifles). He also served under reg. No. 7336 in London Regiment.


He was killed in action and is one of five from the same regiment to be buried in Somer Farm Cemetery, four of whom died on the same day.

Additional Information

Brother to Edgar John Rayner who died in September 1916, also named on the Holy Trinity and Town Memorials, Bishop's Stortford. Father received a war gratuity of £12. Probate was granted to his father on 24 March 1919 with effects of £105 6s 5d.


His father, Mr J H Rayner of 1, Bartholomew Rd., Bishop's Stortford, ordered his headstone inscription: "SNATCHED FROM LOVING PARENTS WITHOUT A MOMENT'S NOTICE".
