Pre War

Arthur Dawson Read is believed to have been born in 1880 (baptised 5 Oct 1880) in Little Amwell to John Read, a general labourer, and Mary Ann known as Margery (nee Barratt).


On the 1881 census Arthur with his parents and elder sister Hester were living at the Heath, Little Amwell. John’s father died in 1887 and on the 1891 Census Arthur was living with his widowed mother, Hester, and younger sister Helena at Church St., St Mary, Ware. In 1901 Arthur was living at Balls Mill Cottages, Stapleford, Ware with his mother and stepfather James Jackson (married 1892) together with his sister Hester (now married Watson) with her daughter Gladys. Margery, Arthur’s mother, married John Alfred Dawes in 1909.

Wartime Service

Arthur volunteered at the outbreak of the Great War as Private 10458 in the Bedfordshire Regiment and was posted to 7th Battalion. During training Arthur was taken ill and died on 17 Oct 1914 at Aldershot.
