Pre War

Arthur Biggerstaff was born in 1895, in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire, son of George Biggerstaff, a Farm Worker and Annie Elizabeth (nee Lee) Biggerstaff. One of eight children.

1901 Census records Arthur aged 6, living with his parents, and six siblings at, The Common, Chipperfield, Herts.

1911 Census records Arthur aged 16, employed as a General Worker, living with his parents, and five siblings in, Chaple Croft, Chipperfield, Herts.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted at Watford, Herts, on 31 May 1915, aged 20, posted to The Kings Royal Rifle Corps, with the service number R/13465, joining his Battalion at Winchester, Hampshire, the following day, 1 June 1915. He arrived in France in September 1915. He was Killed in Action the following year, on 24 August 1916. 

Additional Information

His mother Annie was awarded a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 5 April 1919. His effects of £9-9s-5d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £4-10s-0d, went to his father George. CWGC- have him as Bigerstaff. While SDITGW- have him as Biggerstaffe. His elder brother Private 34869 Fred Biggerstaff was Killed in Action on 22 March 1918.
