Pre War

Arthur Bigg was born in Edwardstone, Suffolk in 1891. He was one of seventeen children born to Edward and Anna Maria Bigg (nee Tuffen). His father’s profession was Gamekeeper.


In 1911, he was living with his parents and two of his siblings in Chignal, nr. Chelmsford, working as a Farm Labourer.

Wartime Service

Arthur went to France on 15 Aug 1914 serving with 4th (Queen’s Own) Hussars taking part in the retreat from Mons and 1st (Oct 1914) and 2nd (Apr 15) Battles of Ypres.


He had a spell of illness in Jun 1915 at No 9 Static Hospital Le Havre and at No12 General Hospital Rouen.


Arthur survived the war and later died of Pneumonia near Liege, Belgium in 1919.

Additional Information

Brother Ernest enlisted in 5 Royal Fusiliers on 14 Nov 1915 transferred to Labour Corps and transferred to Labour Corps 1917 and was in France for April 1919 and demobilised May 1919. His brothers Edward and Samuel also died during the war and are commemorated on the Eastwick Memorial.
