Pre War

George Alfred Binns was born in 1896 in Stoke Newington, Middlesex to Nugent and Alice Binns. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 69 Spencer Road, Stoke Newington where his father was working as a Salesman. By 1911 the family were living at 51 Chalfont Road, Holloway, North London and George was working as an Accountant's Clerk. His mother later lived at Watford Road, Radlett. 

Wartime Service

George originally enlisted into the Honourable Artillery Company as  a Private reg. no. 4129.


He was commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment on 3 February 1918 and joined the Battalion on 6 February for training but only served for 2 months before losing his life.


He was one of two officers killed on 8 April 1918  when his battalion were on the front line during the Battle of the Ancre. 

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs A Binns, 2 Park Villas, Park Road, Radlett, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "SAY NOT GOOD-NIGHT BUT IN SOME BRIGHTER CLIME BID ME GOOD-MORNING". His father received a war gratuity of £14 10s and pay owing of £55 14s 11d.
