Pre War

Frederick Arthur Bird was born in 1895 in Great Hallingbury, Essex (in the registration district of Bishop's Stortford), to William and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bird and lived with his parents at Start Hill Cottages, Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford on the 1901 Census. By the 1911 Census although still living at Start Hill, he was working as an errand boy.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died during the Battle of the Somme. 

Additional Information

His father William received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £3 2s. Brother to Albert Henry Bird who died in 1914 and is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France and who is also named on the Great Hallingbury Memorial.
