Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

Albert Reed was born on 31 July 1889 in Bishop's Stortford to Albert and Sarah Reed and baptised pm 27 September 1889 at Hockerill, Herts. On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 19 Elm Grove Road, Bishop's Stortford and working as a domestic gardener.


He married Kate White in 1912 in Bishop's Stortford and they had  three children, Ellen, Albert and Charles and lived at 9 Church Street, Bishop's Stortford. His widow later lived at 5 Thatch Cottages, Stoney Common, Stansted, Essex.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Bishop's Stortford and initially served with the Hertfordshire Regiment under Reg No. 4818, later transferring to the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action but his body was never recovered for burial, or not identified, and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate.

Additional Information

His widow Kate received a war gratuity of £10 and pay owing of £5 4s 1d. She also received a pension of £1 5s 3d from 25 February 1918. N.B. On some documents Royal Sussex Regt has been miss-transcribed as Royal Surrey Regt.
