Pre War

George Reed was born in Bishop's Stortford on 28 December 1884 to James and Hannah Reed, and baptised at St Michaels, Bishop's Stortford on 25 January 1885.


He married Ellen Saunders in 1907 at Bishops Stortford and had three daughters on the 1911 Census when they were living at 6 Wharf Road, Bishop's Stortford and he was working as a bricklayers labourer. They had a son George in December 1912.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bishop's Stortford and served with the Royal Garrison Artillery, 123rd Heavy Battery, in France from 8 March 1915.


He was killed in action and buried near Zillebeke but later exhumed after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields around Ypres, and smaller cemeteries, and reburied at the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), close to Ypres town centre.  Map Reference where body found: Sheet 28/I 14 G 30.45. Cross found on grave with inscription "RIP No. 14596 Gnr .REED G. 123 Heavy Batt. R.G.A. Killed in action 30 July 1915

Additional Information

His widow Ellen received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £9 4s 7d for herself and her children. She also received a pension of £1 2s 6d from 7 February 1916.
