Royal Masonic School Memorial, Rickmansworth

Pre War

Born 25 Jul 1885 son of William Solly Blackburn and Charlotte Blackburn of Broadstairs, Kent. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1895-1900. He emigrated to Canada and was a farmer near Regina, SK.

Wartime Service

Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Canada he entered France in 1915, was injured losing his right forefinger in 1916 but returned to the front. MC (1916) awarded at Passchendaele. DSO (1917) “He successfully led his company in a raid under heavy fire. During the operation he rushed a machine-gun single-handed, and killed two and captured three of the enemy, besides the gun.” (The Times). He died in hospital of wounds received three days before.
