Pre War
William Rhind was born in 1873 in New Market, Aberdeenshire, the son of James Rhind.
He married Eliza Sired on 18 May 1915 at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex. He was then a widower and a Lance Corporal in the 8th Royal West Kent Regiment, giving his address as The Camp, Shoreham, Sussex.
He was said to be living in Sevenoaks, Kent at the time of enlistment. His widow later lived at 2 Old Spa Villas, Abbots Langley, Herts.
Wartime Service
When he enlisted in Tonbridge, Kent in September 1914 as a special reservist he stated he had served with the 1st Scots Guards and was time expired. He joined the Royal West Kent Regiment, under reg. no. S/517, serving in France from 30 August 1915.
William's death was presumed on or since 26 September 1915. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a pension of 15 shillings a week. Her address on pension records was recorded as Nurses Home Informary, Shoreham by Sea. She also received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £4 19s 2d.
