Charles David Reynolds was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire on 27 January 1897 to [Charles] William and Bessie Reynolds and baptised at the Royal Marine Artillery Church, Eastney on 7 March 1897. His father was a serving Bombadier, RMA. On 1911 Census the family were living at 23 Sidney Terrace, Bishop's Stortford and Charles was working as an Assistant Gardener (Domestic). His father was a Navy Pensioner/Postman for the GPO.


He joined the Royal Navy as a 'Boy' from 5 September 1912 and trained on Ganges to 25 March 1913, then the Edgar and Victory I. He was on the Queen Mary from 16 September 1913.

Wartime Service

Officially enlisted into the Royal Navy on 27 January 1915 for 12 years (on his 18th birthday). He died at the Battle of Jutland when the Queen Mary, a battlecruiser, was hit several times and the forward magazine exploded.  The ship listed to port and more explosions followed as the ship sank. Only 20 of the crew of 1,275 survived.
