Pre War

John was born in Woolwich in 1886 to Daniel Boakes and Ellen Sophia (nee Day). The family were living at Orchard St, Woolwich in 1901. John married Annie Elizabeth Crawford 1914 lived at 77 Coleswood Rd Harpenden.

Wartime Service

John enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps as Private M2/052046 and served in 274 M.T. Company, which only formed in Feb 1915. He died in England 19 November 1915 while on active service.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £3 and arrears of £1 17s 11d paid to his widow. The Inscription on Harpenden Town Memorial is incorrect it is confirmed, by his grandson John Foskett, that the memorial should read John Boakes.
