Pre War

George Ernest was born in Bishop’s Stortford in 1882 to Charles and Eliza Reynolds, but was usually known as Ernest. His family lived at Jervis Road on both 1891 and 1901 Censuses. He married Florence Ellen Herrington on 21 June 1914 at St Mary's Church, Stansted, Essex and was living at 44 Jervis Road in Bishop’s Stortford at the time of enlistment in early June 1916. He was well known and respected in the town, and assisted in the shop belonging to his brother, Mr. H. Reynolds, a fruiterer in South Street.

Wartime Service

Having enlisted in Bishop's Stortford into the Northants Regiment, he was put on Reserve from 10 December 1915 to 4 June 1916. He transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment on his arrival in France in September 1916. As he had trouble with his feet he was not sent to the trenches but helped in the cook-house. Sadly he was killed near the Regimental cook-house together with four others when a shell exploded.

Additional Information

His widow Florence was awarded a pension of £13s 9d a week and a war gratuity of £3 plus pay owing of £2 10s 5d. She later gave her address as The Bury, West Mill, Buntingford.
