Frederick James Bolland was born in Devizes Wilts (baptised 4 Jan 1895) to John Bolland, boilermaker, and Sarah Flora (nee Blake).
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William (born 1883, carpenter), Robert (born 1884, Private 3rd Wilts.), Arthur (born 1889), Henry(born 1892), and Frederick were living at 11, Bridewell Street, Devizes.
On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Arthur (house painter), Henry (assistant boilermaker) and Frederick (domestic gardener) were living at 10, Bridewell Street, Devizes.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Frederick. He enlisted as a Territorial Soldier in the London Regiment as Rifleman 5661 in 21st (County of London) Battalion (1st Surrey Rifles) around Jun 1916 and was probably in France in early 1917. He received the serial number 652528 during the renumbering of the Territorial Force.
The 21st Battalion had been in France since Mar 1915 as part of 142 Brigade, 47 (2nd London) Division (a wholly) Territorial Division) and in 1917 were present at the Battle of Messines (7 – 13 Jun). Frederick was killed in action on 10 Jun 1917, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
