Pre War

Address given as Celia Cottage, Castle Road, St Albans. William Alfred was born in Harpenden on 7 Jan 1888 to Edward Bolton, a Drayman, and Emily (nee How). The family was living at Moreton End Lane Harpenden.


By the 1901 Census William was now living with widowed mother at Luton Road and he was working as a Laundry Hand and in 1911 he was employed as a Collar Ironer. William married Maud Lilian Bozier in 1912.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery at St Albans as Gunner 821396. He served with 282 Brigade ‘A’ Battery.


William was killed in action on 29 Sep 1918 when his Battery was serving during the Battle of the Canal Du Nord.
