Wartime Service

John was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 32252. No Service Record was found for him. He was probably conscripted in 1916 and following his training was posted to 6th (Service) Battalion of the Regiment, which had gone to France on 15 Jul 1915 and was part of 112 Brigade, 37 Division. It is likely that John joined them to take part in the Battles of Arras at 1st Battle of the Scarpe (9-14 Apr) where the Division captured Monchy-le-Prieux and 2nd Battle of the Scarpe (23-24 Apr) in which the Division attacked and took Greenland Hill. It was in this last action that John was presumed to have been killed in action on 23 Apr 1917, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
