Pre War
Ronald Edmond Norman Reynolds was born in 1889, in Whetstone, Middlesex, son of Robert Dunning Reynolds, a Printer and Lily Reynolds (nee Farrow). The youngest of their seven children.
His parents were married on 22nd May 1871, in Hornsey, Middx.
1891 Census records Ronald aged 2, living with his parents, four sisters, and two brothers, Robert (12) and William (7) at Egremont Cottages, Great North Road, Finchley, Middx.
1901 Census, Ronald (12), his parents, two sister and two brothers, are now living at “Catherine villa”, High Road, Finchley, Middx.
His father Robert died in 1905, in Barnet, Herts, aged 56.
1911 Census, Ronald (22), is employed as a Compositor, living with his widowed mother, at “Clovelly Cottage” Friern Park, Finchley, Middx.
His mother Lily later move to The Haven, Upper Village, South Mimms, Herts
Wartime Service
Ronald enlisted at Mill Hill, Middx, in the East Surrey Regiment and issued with the Regimental Number 20475. Initially serving with the 10th Battalion, (a training reserve Battalion) then posted to the 1st Battalion.
On completion of his training Ronald served on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on 4th September 1916, aged 27. He is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, France. Grave Ref: XXV. F. 2.
Additional Information
His effects of £1.13s.97d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his mother Lily Reynolds.
His Headstone inscription “I AM DISTRESSET FOR THEE 2 SAM. 1. 26. MOTHER” was requested by Mrs Lily Reynolds, The Haven, Upper Village, South Mimms, near Barnet, Herts. (His mother).
