Son of J. H. Rigby, of "Poppythorn," Myra Rd., Fairhaven, Lytham, Lancs; husband of Gertrude M. Rigby, of "Bryn Derwen," Caerwys, Flintshire.


Although born in Crumpsall, Lancashire. His service record, starting 30th May 1916, gives 3 Highstone Villas, Hadlet (Hadley Highstone, nr Monken Hadley). His trade was give as a commercial traveller and that he was 28, he later married to Gertrude Martha Gibson of 63 Rectory Lane, Prestwick, Manchester - they married on 20th November 1915


He enlisted in Barnet.

Wartime Service

Formerly 10163 East Kent Regiment.


He was mobilized 39th May 1916 and posted to the 3rd Battalion MGC, 1st June when he became Acting Corporal. He left the UK via Folkestone on 1st April 1917, joining the Base at Camiers on the 2nd, promoted to Corporal 27th March 1917 and then joined 75 Company in the field on 9th July 1917.

 

He was recorded as a casualty (with Scabies) 18th August 1917, be rejoined his Battalion the following day. He went to the base depot 16th October 1917 and went on a 'special' machine gun course to the UK, returning on completion. The on 30th November 1917 he was recorded at retained on establishment, perhaps for training purposes.


He was promoted to Sergeant, 1st December 1917 and posted No. 1 Battalion MGC. He joined 19 Company in the field 22nd February 1918 and killed in action 9th April 1918.

His widow was awarded a pension of 16s 3d a week on the 11th November 1918 was later recorded at Bryn Ferwent, Caerwys, Flintshire
