Royal Masonic School Memorial, Rickmansworth

Pre War

Born on 22 Jan 1898 in Wigan, Lancashire son of John and Emma Jane Rigby later of 113 Beaconsfield Street, Deane Road, Bolton. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1908-14 and became an insurance clerk in Manchester.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Aug 1916 Private, Manchester Regiment and was made Corporal in Feb 1917. In Jul 1917 he was recommended for a commission and was sent to Cadet School. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 31 Oct 1917, Royal Fusiliers, 6th Bn. he was initially stationed in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. In Jan 1918 he was sent to Italy and then to France to counter the German Spring Offensive. In Jul 1918 he transferred to the Royal Air Force and trained as an observer. He returned to France but was shot down and reported missing.
