Pre War

Arthur Henry was born 1887 in Great Amwell, the eldest son to Arthur Brace, a labourer, and Alice (nee George).


On the 1891 Census Arthur Henry was living at London Road, Little Amwell with his parents, younger brother Frank and younger sister Rose. By the 1901 Census Arthur Henry was employed as a groom, the family were living at Western terrace, Hailey Brickfield, Great Amwell and increased with addition of Violet, Ellen, Jessie, Douglas, William and James. On the 1911 Arthur Henry was serving as Gunner in 15 Company, Royal Garrison Artillery. Arthur married Margaret Eleanor Wooldridge in 1913 and was living in Newbury, Berks

Wartime Service

Arthur was probably a reservist when the Great War commenced and was enlisted as Gunner 20173 Arthur went to France on 8 Mar 1915 as Acting Bombardier with 122 Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. He was at some time promoted to Sergeant.


His Battery was deployed to the Ypres area and took part in the Battle of Passchendaele. Arthur was killed in action on 30 Sep 1917, presumably a result of German counter battery fire as he is buried among other Artillery casualties of the same unit on that day in  Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery. 

Additional Information

His widow, Mrs M L Perry, Chibby Milly Bridge, Waltham St. Lawrence, Twyford, Berks., ordered his headstone inscription: "TILL THE DAY BREAK". War gratuity of £21 and arrears of £20 11s 1d was paid to his widow Margaret. Brother of Private Douglas Brace 27000 Somerset Light Infantry who died on 30 Sep 1916 and is also commemorated on these memorials.
