Herbert James Bradford was born in 1879 to James Bradford, a carman, and Elizabeth (nee Woodman).


On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Herbert, Grace Alice (born 1881) were living at 1, Hanler road, West, St Pancras London with a boarder Eliza Byfield (needlewoman, born 1817).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Herbert, Grace Alice and Elice (born 1883) were living at 10, Lockington Road, Battersea, Woolwich.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents and Herbert ( labourer,glassworks) were living at 46 Savona Street, Battersea, London.


On the 1911 Census Herbert was listed as a labourer and was still living with his parents at 46, Savona Street, Battersea.


Herbert married Elizabeth Collins on 1 Mar 1913 at St Anne’s Church, Wandsworth, London.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Herbert.He probably enlisted in late 1915/early 1916 as Rifleman S/31461 in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) and went to France to join 3rd Battalion in 17 Brigade 24 Division.


The Division was involved in Battles of the Somme at Delville Wood (15 Jul-3 Sep 1916), Guillemont (3-6 Sep 1916). In 1917 they moved to the Arras area and were present at the Battle of Vimy Ridge (9-14 Apr) before moving to the Ypres Sector in preparation for the Battle of Messines (7-14 Jun). Herbert was killed in action on 8 Jun 1917 in this last action.


Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 2s 1d was paid to his widow.  His widow, Elizabeth Bradford, later lived at 101, Common View, Letchworth, Herts.
