Thomas was the son of Harry and Emily Roberts born circa 1893.


1901 Census: Thomas was 8 and living with his parents at two siblings, Henry (10), and John (5).  He also had an elder sister called Annie L who was not present and 1 boarder at 30 Glebe Cottages, Hatfield.  His father working as a general labourer – he had previously been a beer house keeper in Great Marlow, Bucks.  They were still there in 1911 and the only noticeable change was that Thomas was working as a railway porter and that they had three boarders.


He married Sophia Mary Roberts, of 1, Ringslade Rd., Wood Green. London


Officially recorded as born in Great Marlow Buckinghamshire and enlisted in Wood Green, Middx.

Wartime Service

Formerly 21890, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry but became Private 24383, 7th Bn., Royal Dublin Fusiliers.


Recorded as died of malaria in the Balkans, September 18, 1916.

Additional Information

Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger: Mrs Roberts (Mother) of 30 Glebe Cottages, Hatfield, received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.


He is commemorated on the family headstone in St Luke’s Churchyard

also Thomas, the dearly loved husband of Sophie Roberts, who died of malaria while serving with the
Balkan forces on 18th September 1916 aged 24 years.
