Pre War

George Robertson was born in 1893 in Birmingham to William Robertson, and Elizabeth (Not found).

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William (born 1887), Sarah A (born 1888), George, Elizabeth (born 1896), Eva (born 1897), Samuel (born 1899) and Lily (born 1901) were living at 69, Staniforth Street, Birmingham. His parents were umbrella repairers.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, William, George, Elizabeth (Lizzie), Eva, Samuel, Lily, Florrie (born 1903), Louie (Louise?, born 1905) were living at 377, New John Street North, Birmingham.

George married Caroline Mabel Hayes on 27 Oct 1912 at St Edward’s Church, Birmingham.

His widow Caroline married George Francis Williams on 7 Aug 1916. They later lived at 139, Common View,

Letchworth.


Wartime Service

No Service record was found for George. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment as Private 12463. His serial was issued about Jun 1911, and he was probably posted to 1st Battalion of the Regiment serving in Egypt until following the outbreak of the Great War returned to UK on 16 Oct 1914. Having re-equipped George and the Battalion landed at Le Havre on 5 Nov 1914 to join 24 Brigade, 8 Division. At some George was posted to 4th Battalion, Worcesters and went with them to Gallipoli as part of 88 Brigade, 29 Division, landing at Cape Helles on 25 Apr 1915. George was reported as killed in action on 6 Aug 1915. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Cape Helles, Gallipoli.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 10s  and arrears of £5 13s 7d was paid to his widow.
