Pre War

Born in 1891 in Hertford son of Frederick and Mary Brand living in 22 Bullocks Lane, Hertford in 1911. He was a corn dealer’s assistant.

He enlisted at Hertford.

Wartime Service

He went to France on 26th July 1915 He received The Distinguished Gallantry Medal in late September 1916, during The Battle of Thiepval Ridge and the taking of The Schwaben Redoubt. His citation states “For Conspicuous Gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his Company with great courage and initiative, reorganising and consolidating the position gained.” He was also awarded the Military Medal.
