On the 1891 Census the family were living at 34 Paulet Road, Camberwell and his father was working as a stone mason. They remained there in 1901.

He married Emily Eliza Long in early 1910 and their son Norman Edgar was born later the same year.  On the 1911 Census Emily was listed as living with their son and her mother and brother, at 7 Dalkeith Road, West Dulwich but Edgar was not listed with them.

He was said to be living in Bushey, Herts at the time of enlistment.
