Raymond Braybrooke was born in 1894 in Holwell, Beds, the son of Florence Braybrooke, and baptised at Ickleford on 28 October 1894. His mother married Richard Godfrey in 1898.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Village Street, Ickleford where his father/stepfather was working as a Labourer. (N.B. Raymond was listed with the surname Godfrey).
On the 1911 Census he was living at Village Street, Ickleford, with his stepfather, mother and six siblings and working as an apprentice motor fitter.
Wartime Service
He initially enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment under Reg. No. 13627, later transferring to the Army Service Corps. He served in France from 17 March 1915.
Raymond had served in the field for 2 years 9 months when he suffered from pyrexia of unknown origin (fever) on 29 June 1917 but recovered and was discharged back to duty on 3 July 1917.
He died on 21 December 1918 from broncho pneumonia and is buried in Caudry British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £25 and pay owing of £5 4s 1d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
