Thomas Brickley was born on 15 June 1886 in Holborn, the son Hannah Brickley, who was born in Ireland, and he was baptised at St Patricks RC Church, Soho. She was then living at 10 Kellow Street, Holborn and working as a Hawker. (His birth is listed under the the London Poor Law Union & Board of Guardian Records (workhouses).
He was admitted to Mill Hill Roman Catholic School on 20 December 1889 and discharged on 15 January 1890. On the 1891 Census he was listed as a scholar at the St Vincent Roman Catholic orphanage in Hendon. By the 1901 Census he was living with his mother Hannah (widow) at 65 Endell Street, Holborn, brothers William 28, Daniel 23, and sisters Mary 19 and Eden 14. He remained with his mother in 1911 and was living with his mother and brothers William and Daniel at 39 Grays Inn Buildings, Roseberry Avenue, London W.C. and was working as a printer's assistant.
His mother later lived at 42, Koh-i-noor Avenue, Bushey, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Holborn and initially joined the 18th Battalion (London Irish Rifles) , London Regiment as Private 4690, later being promoted to Corporal and then acting Lance Sergeant, and was transferred to the 20th (County of London) Battalion of the London Regiment.
Thomas was killed in action in France on 2 August 1918, aged 31, and is buried in Contay British Cemetery, France
Additional Information
His mother Hannah received a war gratuity of £11 and pay owing of 16s 4d. Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant which suggest a pension was paid but no amount is shown.
Although CWGC website information states he was the son of Edward and Hannah Brickley, no information has yet been found relating to Edward.
